I wrote the memoir with the voice of a naïve but bright ten-year-old boy. The memoir is largely autobiographical and full of humour and irony. As I wrote, I became more and more aware that what passed as normal at the time was far from normal in other cultures. Like most who think of their past, I remember the sunny days. But, inevitably, I saw in the terrible divisions in political and religious belief, the background that led directly to thirty years of “Troubles” starting in the 1960s.
